Wherever you like to fish, from a lakeside morning to an outing at a State Park, we have some ideas and some items to help you discover what it takes to bring home your next trophy catch. See Fishing Gear Items 73-78.
Your fishing rod is one of the most important items you need. They can be made from materials including bamboo, graphite, fiberglass and composite blends. Materials impact the rod’s action and should be designed for your skill level according to our expert. Try some different materials and see what you like best. Orvis Stores, Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's offer fly fishing classes and plenty of advice to help you fish for fun.
- Fiberglass rods: Typically geared towards beginners. These rods need little maintenance, have an average weight and solid rod strength. If you are fishing for larger fish, you’ll need a heavy, durable rod.
- Graphite rods: Usually preferred by advanced anglers due to their superior strength and lightness. The lightweight graphite handles most fishing situations well, providing more fighting power in the rod.
- Bamboo rods: Produces a smooth, fluid back cast which provides its own dampening effect at the end of the back cast, featuring the highest quality built from Tonkin cane.
Some of our rods have very nice reels. We also have waders to keep your feet dry. Item 77 What to put your tackle box is a carefully guarded secret for some. Get a jump on the action with our stocked tackle box.
Where to fish might be a dilemma as there are plenty of fun spots to try close to Pittsburgh. Here are two of our new favorites.
1. Cross Creek Lake - Washington County
This county-owned, 258-acre stocked lake offers plenty of shore fishing for panfish, as well as excellent bass fishing. A county permit is required for boating.
2. Point State Park
The Pittsburgh TriAnglers welcomes both members and non-members to try their hand at fishing from the riverfront wall at Point State Park every Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (many members come on their lunch hour - some even dressed in suits!). Free fishing tackle and instruction. Participants need only show up with a license and a sense of adventure. What fun!
Remember you will need a fishing license. A Pennsylvania fishing license, including stamps and permits, can be purchased at one of over 1,300 official License Issuing Agents, County Treasurer offices and Fish & Boat Commission offices in the state of Pennsylvania. This includes most major sporting goods retailers.
Don’t forget the bait. I will let you in on a family secret... the best bait is the last dead shrimp. I was 10 and saltwater fishing off a dock in Florida. We only had one dead shrimp. Dad said I would never catch anything with that. So you know what happened next? I caught the biggest snook of my life. After a long time, I was too tired to reel it in so Dad got to help. A 20 pound beautiful snook that was mounted for all to see.
Best day of our lives. Big fish or small - fishing for fun is guaranteed. Happy Fishing!
Happy Bidding!
Liz
